It is springtime in Appalachia. To the solidly built,
colorful abode of the country nephew arrives the city dwelling, affluent rich
uncle. Is it the late 1950’s when the Cloud I Rolls Royce was new? Or is the
uncle a collector of fine vintage automobiles?
This painting by David John Mega rises above the limits of
a period piece by the interplay of recognizable archetype imagery to create a
mood of intellectual whimsy. The pastel-like, almost monochromatic coloring
brings a springtime harmony to the painting. Although rendered in minute
detail, every brick in the building can be counted, every blade of grass can be
seen, this work is not intended to be based in realism, it instead transcends
that genre and becomes surreal in the eyes of the astute beholder.
